Can I Replace the Glass in Double Glazing Windows When It Breaks or Mists Over?

Despite assertions from some sales representatives urging you to replace the entire window frame, it’s essential to recognize that, for a significantly lower cost, you can opt to replace just the glass unit, potentially saving you hundreds or even thousands of pounds. Double glazing not only enhances the comfort of living spaces by regulating temperatures but also provides added security and reduces external noise. Unfortunately, these advantages are compromised when the glass in the pane breaks, deteriorates, or if there’s a defect in the air gap sealing, leading to misting.

Double glazed windows are crafted as a unit, consisting of two panes of glass separated by an air gap. The glass may be standard or special energy-efficient glass, and the unit is sealed, often with the gap filled with inert gas or a vacuum. To replace the glass in a double-glazing unit, the entire unit must be removed from the window frame, and although the glass can be replaced, resealing the assembly may not be satisfactory. Opting for a new double-glazed unit of the same size is more advisable to ensure proper fitting within the window frame.

We highly recommend entrusting any double-glazing replacement or repair to the original installers or another competent professional window installer.

If, however, you are considering a DIY approach, keep these points in mind:

  • Accurate measurements of the frame opening must be taken after removing the original double-glazed unit.
  • Review the existing fixing arrangements to use appropriate fixtures and fittings during the new glazing installation.
  • Ensure that the new glass in the replacement unit matches the original thickness to maintain the unit’s ability to fit into the window frame with the original arrangements.

While it is possible to replace just the glass in double glazing, it is not recommended. However, you can opt for replacing the entire glazing unit, avoiding the need to replace the entire frame and at a much lower cost.
